Hand-sewing straight and neatly?
My freaking sewing machine is acting up again and I'm trying to work on a project, but I suck at hand-sewing. How can I get my stitches even and neat looking enough to wear on a hoodie? The material is medium weight cotton (doubled), black so I can't use a pencil on it. I have tailor's chalk but it doesn't seem to work very well on this material: I try to draw on it and the fabric just moves all over the place. I'm probably just going to use a very small straight stitch. Thanks in advance.
This is not an easy fabric to hand sew, as you have already realized.
Neat hand stitching takes practice and with this heavy fabric, you will need a lot of straight-pins to hold it in place as you stitch.
Painter's tape is good for laying out a straight line, but with this fabric, you will have to pin it in several places to keep it from coming off before you are done.
Poor maintenance and threading with the presser foot up are the most common reasons for a sewing machine to not work properly.
Taking a few minutes to refer to the manual for cleaning may be worthwhile.
