Sewing Question about dresses and skirts?
I am gonna start making my own clothes with the 1950's vintage patterns, and I absolutley love how they had full skirts back then. i want to make sure that the skirts will be pretty full (not like a hoop skirt full, but like in the pattern pictures) I want to have an alternative, so I would like some tips on how to make a skirt fuller. Thanks a lot for the help! plz answer!!!
Remember that vintage patterns had only one pattern size in them, and the clothes then were designed to be worn over vastly different undergarments than are worn today. Bra shape was different, you didn't leave the house without a girdle (which was usually close to bulletproof!). Expect to wear crinolines under the wider skirts, and expect to have to do a fair number of alterations to the pattern to fit a modern body. You may be better off with the "vintage Vogue" or "Decades of Style" patterns that are drafted for modern bodies.
Hoops were generally reserved for more formal occasions (they're a pain to wear), If you need that much fullness, clothesline sewn in the petticoat hem can be a lot easier to wear and give a very similar effect.
