How can I sew the pom pom back onto my hat?
The pom pom on top of one of my favorite hats just kind of fell off recently. There wasn't any tearing or anything like that when it happened...it just sort popped off. I'm pretty bad at sewing, but I have a little travel sewing kit and I'd really like to fix it myself. It's a knit cap and the pom pom doesn't really appear to have any point to really start attaching...where do I start? Thank you!
To sew the pompom back on, thread a needle and tie a knot at the ends. Then stick the needle through the very center of the pompom...that will be a fairly thick area since it will be where all of the lengths of the pompom are connected. (If necessary, use a strong needle or press a thinner needle through with a pair of pliers**.) You'll probably need to separate the outer parts of the pompom to see the middle clearly and access it.
Attach the thread well to the pompom, then run your needle through the top of the hat where you want to attach it. When you pull the excess thread between the pompom and the hat taut, the pompom will be drawn onto the hat. Then just take more stitches and tie off.
You can also just use glue to reattach it, or use a bit of glue underneath when you sew it back on for extra security.
You could probably get away with glue gun glue only (again, separate the threads, put the glue on the very center of the pompom then immediately press onto the hat firmly and hold till set). Glue gun glue holds pretty well on fuzzy things if it's pushed onto them tightly.
Or you could use a permanent white glue (or "fabric" glue) but since that doesn't grab and hold immediately, you'll need to clamp or weight the parts together while the glue dries (be sure glue doesn't touch anything you don't want it to touch...can use plastic wrap or baggie or aluminum foil to keep things from touching if necessary).
(You can also use the white glue along with the glue gun glue...just put on the white glue, then add the glue gun glue but *not in the exact same spots* then press together--the warm glue will hold fairly quickly and you won't need to clamp while the white glue dries.)
**You can also grip the needle better if necessary by using a piece of rubber or silicone (or sometimes even a thick rubberband, etc) around it.
