ref: oil spill in Gulf.?
Low tech idea to capture oil before releasing into main body. Nylon tarp sewed together to make along tube with steel ring on bottom released with plastic cable dropped over side of ship to cover leak oil lighter than water will rise through tube and collect at top. Unknowns would be currents and acids in oil. collecting oil would be preferred instead of letting the environment take the hit. cost would be less, recoverery would be more everybody wins.
well for a start it wont be low cost. For a start the manufacturing costs for the sheet would be expensive, not to mention getting the ships out there to drop said "tarp". Yes very true the water is less dense than oil, but pushing the oil down would not collect it, if anything it would push it out further thus polluting even more water.
The oil is being collected by using vast amounts of human hair, anyone with greasy hair would no just how easily it soaks up oil. not just letting the enviroment take the hit. Don't bitch about it now, bitch about how they weren't prepared for such an emergency eg. a contigency plan.
