how do you tell how many rows a pleater pleats?

I am trying to sell one, and someone asked... I have never pleated; how do I tell?

If you are talking about a smocking pleater count the number of spaces for needles and that is the number of rows. I think it will be 8,16,24, or 32. It has been a long time since I used one.
