how much should I charge for pattern making?
I've been doing some pattern making (kids pj's) for a client and he asked me what I'm charging and I have no idea what's fair. I've only done this for myself. I've made 4 patterns in multiple sizes as well as samples for sizes 2t through youth 13 in one of those patterns. The patterns alone took about 8 hours. And the samples took about 50 hours. (charging for supplies separately)
I have no idea what to charge because this is the first time I've done this for anybody by myself. I don't want to overcharge but I also don't want to cheat myself. I also do the patterns by hand not on a CAD program.
First of all get a patent on them so you will be the recipient of you work. Don't give them out free. Set up your own site on internet. Now look through McCall's, Simplicity, etc. and see what they charge for patterns. Normally craft people can take the amount the spent on an object and multiply it by three and charge that amount but your in a different game. I am not sure but I think that the person who makes up patterns and such are graphic artists. If I am right on this you can cut down on what they get per hour. This man your speaking of....is he in business? Is he using your pattern to make more pj's? If so and now that you don't have a patent on them and he is making money tell him rather than charging him you want a percentage of the profits on the pj's. This is all that I can
