Bobbin Sewing Quilting

I need to replace my sewing machine- help!?
I have been sewing off and on for 7 years, and only had a beginners machine ( a singer 2517). I have recently (the past 2 years) been very interested in it, and last night in the middle of stitching a blanket the machine totally died. I knew it was on its way out, it wasnt the best of machines and I had major trouble with the tension and the bobbin holder constanly came out of place and jammed everything. My question is... now that I am using my machine more, what type should I buy? I dont quilt, i mostly make small things like baby clothing, blankets, curtains, etc. Money is a big factor, also. I cant afford to drop more than 250 on a machine. thanks
With something like this I would suggest you go to the store and work the machines and see how they handle and what they will do. The clerk at the store should be happy to tell you the advantages of the machines but don't tell him/her how much you have to spend.
